The Pirates paced the league with just 512 runs allowed. Pittsburgh scored 691 runs. Willie Stargell walloped 33 home runs for the squad, while Richie Hebner swatted 20 or more, too. Willie Stargell accounted for 112 RBI. Al Oliver topped all regular batters by connecting at a .312 clip. Steve Blass paced the team with 19 wins, plus Dock Ellis, too added 15 or more wins, too Steve Blass recorded a 2.49 ERA, best among regularly-used pitchers.

Bill Virdon coached the team. The 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates qualified for the playoffs as a division winner.
